Fierce Gales Cause Tens of Thousands In the Dark in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals urged to remain inside as severe gales lash the nation.

Severe gusts attaining velocities of up to 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in approximately 90,000 properties experiencing outages and forced agencies to halt over 100 flights, based on domestic outlets.

The winds are impacting the complete southern region and southern parts of the North Island, per the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have announced infrequent red wind warnings - the most severe warning - in core zones encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

Residents have been urged to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for further electricity and network failures.

Extensive Damage and Emergency Response

The electricity loss seems to be impacting homes mainly in the southern region, though officials say that the electricity supply was being slowly brought back.

Regional news have reported that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, while power lines and trees have been brought down by the gales.

Within the capital, a man was lost his life after being hit by a tree branch at a frequent walking route on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a woman was pushed toward moving cars on a street by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Flights in and out of the city have been cancelled due to the gusts, and some roads and libraries are not operating.

Simultaneously local leaders have announced a emergency situation, to facilitate emergency management operations.

Work Stoppages Amid Extreme Conditions

The wild winds on Thursday come as many of teachers, doctors and other public workers take part in what has been described as a "significant labor action", demanding improved salaries and workplace environments.

Yet the extreme weather has forced them to modify some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies relocated inside or abandoned.

Like conditions are impacting the neighboring country, bringing a period of extreme heat to the nation's interior regions.

Agencies have issued flame prohibitions for apprehension regarding bushfires.
