A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
