Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals buying such medications should be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
