Puzzling Rosy Slime on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Spurs Anxiety of Potential Phytoplankton Proliferation
Agencies in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a pink slime that has materialized on a isolated coast, with some scientists concerned it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Broad Presence Across Beaches
The magenta-hued slime was found on a stretch of a coastal area about 37 miles south of the city. A similar sludge has also been noted on sections of Little Roaring Beach and Little Taylors Bay.
Samples Gathered for Testing
Examples have been collected and provided to the environmental agency for examination. A spokesperson commented that "phytoplankton proliferations are a natural occurrence in response to variations in food sources, heat, rainfall or light".

Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that typically function as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a outbreak, there is a fast increase in their numbers that interferes with the normal functioning of aquatic systems.

An estuarine ecologist, who helped investigate the onset of South Australia's outbreak said, based on photos of the current situation, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "sea sparkle".
"There have been lots of these outbreaks around Tasmania of late," she added.
The scientist said the algae did not create harmful substances comparable to the species involved in South Australia's severe event, but it does ingest tiny creatures and "lots of fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were most at risk.
"It's common to observe a bloom of sea sparkle after a bloom of another organism, or for example a marine breeding," she said.
Appeals for Response and Public Safety
A marine scientist, who collected samples of the rosy slime in the state, said it appeared the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and proposed the aquaculture sector was the probable cause, citing like situations in other places.
"So we needs to deliver a strong warning here, the officials and the EPA need to act to this. We need to examine the examples we've collected and we need to put word out the public here," she stated.
The scientist expressed she had anxieties for community health after noticing a tingling sensation along her limbs and skin while being splashed with tainted seawater.

An advocacy organization has reported dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner describing the event as an "ecological crisis" and calling on the state premier to inspect and "assume command the effort that government must be doing".
