Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured experts in multiple disciplines.
