Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'Fresh Chapter' for New York City in First Speech
On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold beginning to his tenure.
A Groundbreaking Figure
The 34-year-old figure, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

- A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
